Thank you for choosing Renew Painting!
Painting is More than Painting:
Painting is only 10% of the work — prepping, procurement, problem solving, and cleaning up is the other 90%!
While the painted surface is what clients can enjoy for years after a painting project ends, what makes the end result enjoyable to look at is the prep work that goes into creating the finished product. Renew Painting doesn’t just throw a coat of paint on over bugs, dirt, debris, and damaged surfaces; Renew Painting knows that a quality painting project ends with paint and begins with prep work.
Painting prep work includes pressure washing exterior surfaces and wiping down interior surfaces, repairing damages, filling holes, caulking, taping, and making the surface the best it can be so that when the paint does go on it not only looks better than before, but holds up better, too.
John, owner of Renew Painting, takes care of all the prep work himself and also lets clients know if there are damages that are beyond Renew Painting’s scope of professional services so that clients can find a qualified contractor to make any needed repairs.
As well, Renew Painting provides complimentary services with every project which include selecting paint colors, testing sample colors, ordering and picking up the paint, and communicating with the paint representatives if there are any problems.
John also works with clients to resolve non-painting problems when it impacts his work. For instance, when a Renew Painting client ordered hardware for cabinets and half the order was incorrect, John stepped in to speak to the supplier on behalf of the client to ensure the correct hardware would be provided. Even with the unplanned delay, the job was completed as described in the contract with new hardware installed in the cabinets.
Moving furniture is part of painting too, along with cleaning up each day and at the end of the job, so that the area is better than before the project started.
Renew Painting knows that painting is more than painting, and John aims to go beyond what is expected so that his clients can relax knowing they are in capable hands!
Experience from a Committed and Qualified Professional:
John Rusler, owner of Renew Painting, has spent over 25 years in the home building and industry trades; while he is a painter now, he has a long history of home improvement and building maintenance.
John is originally from the Puyallup area in Pierce County, Washington; after graduating high school he entered the United States Marine Corps in basic infantry and fulfilled his time until his honorable discharge in 1994; he subsequently entered the National Guard and served until his honorable discharge in the early 2000s.
Throughout John’s life he has worked in various fields related to landscaping, home improvement and building maintenance, both professionally for licensed businesses and personally for himself and family. More than being handy, John has developed his skills and knowledge over the years through hands-on application, research, and experience.
After moving to the Sequim area in 2014, John became a general contractor with his own home services business; he also worked as a site manager, coordinator, and quality control inspector for home building companies on the Olympic Peninsula which afforded him the opportunity to broaden his experience and further his education with home inspector courses.
One thing John learned while working for local home builders was the need for quality residential painting services in the Sequim area.
John also learned from his experience as a general contractor that he would prefer to focus on one trade instead of offering multiple services.
John’s experiences are what guided him to create Renew Painting so that he could focus on one trade and be the one to provide quality residential painting services to homeowners in Sequim and Port Angeles!
The man who chases two rabbits, catches neither.
– Confucius –
John is fully committed to Renew Painting as the owner and operator; he takes care of his clients one-on-one and also manages the administrative demands of running a business.
Renew Painting is not a side hustle. John does not own another business or work for anyone else, so he is not pulled in multiple directions from either business or recreational endeavors that compete with his obligations to Renew Painting clients — in other words, John does not chase two rabbits.
Outside of work, John is a homebody and tends to his rural property, which now includes chickens; when he isn’t taking care of property projects, John expands his knowledge of business and other personal interests by taking online courses, reading e-books, and listening to podcasts; he also enjoys time at home with his wife Jennifer, co-owner of Renew Painting, and their cats.
John’s dedication to Renew Painting and his extensive knowledge of the building trades means that he gives his full attention to each client and their projects; he also knows what to look for structurally when it comes to painting residential buildings so he can give his clients excellent service, a great experience, and superb results!

No Guesstimating with the Eyeball Method at Renew Painting!
John makes his measurements using a laser distance measuring tool; once he has the measurements, he prepares a bid; and once the bid is accepted, a contract is drawn up, a deposit is made, and supplies are purchased for the job.
The benefit of making accurate measurements with a tool, compared to the eyeball method, is that money is not wasted on paint and supplies that aren’t needed because of inaccurate measurements due to guessing.

What is the Difference Between an Estimate and a Bid?
An estimate is a guess as to how much money and time a project can take.
While it might save time to be given a rough estimate over the phone based on square footage without looking at the project in person, that estimate won’t include assessing damages and repairs that may be needed before painting can begin, and such an assessment requires professional training and knowledge.
With over 25 years of experience in the home building and maintenance trades, John knows what to look for when it comes to repairing damages that may not be obvious to untrained eyes.
John’s training and knowledge allows him to provide the highest quality results for his clients, by prepping the surfaces to be painted to ensure that the finished product not only looks good, but the integrity of the surface is better than when he found it.
This is why Renew Painting prefers to take out the guesswork of an estimate by providing a detailed bid after doing an assessment of the project in person.
The bid will give an exact price and the timeframe a project will require; this eliminates any unwanted surprises in the price when the project is complete.
The price will not change during the course of the project unless there are change orders requested for new projects that were not part of the original bid.
How Does Renew Painting Conduct a Bid?
John wants to provide exactly what is requested in a project, whether it is for cabinets, the interior or exterior of a house.
Upon contacting Renew Painting, John will schedule a time and date for a bid meeting when he will look over the project.
A bid meeting takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, and clients only need to meet with John for the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes (before and after he takes measurements and assesses the project).
It is recommended that all parties involved with making decisions of color choices and materials to be used are present.
During the bid meeting John will walk through the project and ask specific questions regarding problem areas that may need additional work (i.e., peeling paint, damaged trim, etc.).
After taking all the necessary measurements and photos, John will prepare a written bid package that will be emailed within 24 to 48 hours.
Bids include details of the required labor and preparation for the project, along with three Sherwin-Williams paint options for a client to choose from regarding the quality of the paint products — good, better, and best — that will fit the desired budget.
How Long is a Bid Good For?
After 30 days a bid becomes void if it is not accepted; this is due to price increases in paint and supplies.
If a bid is accepted after 30 days without changing the scope of work, the prices will be adjusted as needed and a new bid will be created to reflect the new pricing.
What Happens After the Bid is Accepted?
When the bid is accepted by the client, John will draw up a contract; once the contract is signed, a 50% deposit is required. After John records the signed contract and deposit in his books, a receipt will be emailed to the client for their records.
Sample Contract:

Why is There a Contract, and Why is a Deposit Needed?
The purpose of the contract is to protect all parties involved, both Renew Painting and the client. As a licensed, bonded, and insured business, Renew Painting provides a layer of protection that a bid doesn’t, because a bid is not a legally binding contract but only an offer.
Renew Painting aims to put clients at ease with a detailed contract that holds Renew Painting responsible for providing the services agreed upon by all parties.
The deposit serves two purposes: first, it locks the project into the calendar; second, it is used to purchase paint and necessary supplies so that materials will be on hand when they are needed. Ordering supplies early helps to avoid supply chain issues that can occur on the Olympic Peninsula.
When the deposit is received, a time and start date for the project will be decided upon that works for everyone involved.
When is the Best Time to Schedule a Bid?
If you are even thinking about getting your house painted, especially the exterior, schedule a bid with Renew Painting as soon as possible!
Contractors of various trades are in high demand on the Olympic Peninsula and some of them have their schedules booked up years in advance due to the lack of contractors in the area. While homeowners may be ready for their homes to be painted the moment they call, the reality is a contractor may not be ready due to their schedule.
Getting on Renew Painting’s schedule doesn’t happen without a bid, so the sooner a bid is scheduled and a contract signed, the sooner you can secure a spot on the painting schedule.
The schedule for exterior season fills up during the summer and winter months prior to exterior season. For instance, the 2023 exterior season was booked up during summer and winter of 2022, months before exterior season even started.
Once exterior season starts in May, interior projects don’t begin until November since exterior painting requires warmer weather. No matter what the project is for — cabinets, interiors, or exteriors — it is best to schedule a bid as soon as possible to get the ball rolling and start the planning process.
Does Renew Painting Give Discounts?
Yes.
There is a 10% discount for seniors, veterans, and returning clients.
Does Weather Impact Renew Painting’s Schedule?
Yes, it does.
Due to weather conditions, it is best that exterior projects are conducted during the warmer months (May to October), and interior projects are conducted during the colder months (November to April).
However, it all depends on the weather; when there is more rain and wind during the spring and summer months, projects may get shuffled around.
Not only does weather impact the schedule, but temperatures do too.
While the weather may be good in the daytime, if the temperatures get near freezing at night, especially in early spring, it can create subpar results for exterior projects.
For instance, when pressure washing has to be done to prep for an exterior project, if it is too cold for the water to dry the moisture becomes trapped inside the surface and eventually expands which alters the surface and has a negative impact on the end result.
As well, Renew Painting follows the product specifications regarding application of exterior paint, which can be found on Sherwin-Williams Product Data Sheets and states:
When the air temperature is at 35°F, substrates
may be colder; prior to painting, check to be
sure the air, surface, and material temperature
are above 35°F and at least 5°F above the dew
point. Avoid using if rain or snow is expected
within 2-3 hours. Do not apply at air or surface
temperatures below 35°F or when air or surface
temperatures may drop below 35°F within 48
hours.
Weather and temperature delays aren’t ideal; however, it is better to delay the start of a project than to do the project again which takes more time and money, creates an inconvenience to the homeowners, and it still delays the completion of the project.
Renew Painting strives to fit everyone into the schedule and complete all projects when they are scheduled, but delays can happen due to the weather and temperatures.
If a project has to be bumped to another time, Renew Painting works with a client to figure out the best solution for all parties involved.
Why Sherwin-Williams Paint?
While there are many paint brands on the market, the reality is that there are very few specialty paint stores in Sequim.
Various paint brands of exceptional quality are available in Sequim, including Sherwin-Williams Paint, but as a professional contractor and a one-man operation with limited time in a day, John needs more than paint — he needs services that save him time so he can provide more time to his clients and their projects.
When John first started Renew Painting, he went to different stores for paint products, and it taught him something — none of the other stores offer the same services as the Sherwin-Williams Paint Store in Sequim!
Since John procures the paint for each project himself, and paint is the product he orders more than any other product, he looks for more than what a general home improvement hardware store offers when it comes to service.
Here is what makes Sherwin-Williams the preferred choice of Renew Painting:
- Assistance from staff employees who are knowledgeable about the products they carry and can even provide recommendations.
- Ease of ordering that allows John to call in an order and the store has the project information in their database for reference, so he can get more work done on a project rather than stand in line at a store to place the order.
- Convenient service from the staff who call John when an order is ready for pick-up, which gives him more time to work on a project instead of waiting at the store while paint gets mixed.
- A paint manufacturing representative who responds to inquiries and problems, and also helps resolve problems.
When it comes to color choices, Sherwin-Williams can match any color from another paint brand too!
Sherwin-Williams does it all and that is why Renew Painting uses Sherwin-Williams Paint, along with their exceptional product quality!
Even though Sherwin-Williams is the preferred paint of Renew Painting, if a client prefers another brand John is pleased to work with a client to provide what they want for their project.
How Big is the Renew Painting Crew?
John is a solo painter and because of this he works on one project at a time; this gives him a greater level of attention to each project which results in higher quality work.
Being a solo painter also gives John better ability to keep to the schedule and finish projects on time.
How Long Does a Project Take to Complete?
It all depends on the project, and as a one-man operation it will take more time compared to a crew of multiple painters.
For exterior projects, John allows one to two weeks to complete an entire house, depending on the size of the house and if there are outbuildings too; this includes prep work such as pressure washing, making repairs, and clean-up after painting is complete.
- This is why it is beneficial to schedule an exterior project as early as possible, since there is only room for 14 to 16 exterior projects each year, and it is dependent on the size of the houses and optimal weather conditions.
For interior and cabinet projects, it varies depending on the size of the area(s) to be painted, how the surface will be painted (brush or spray), and if there are damages that need to be repaired.
Interior and cabinet projects can take anywhere from a few days to a week or more, as it all depends on the scope of the work involved.
This is why John prefers to provide clients with a detailed bid so they will know what to expect when it comes to the exact cost and the timeframe involved for a project.
What Does the Renew Painting Work Truck Look Like?
When John arrives for the bid and to work on the project, he will arrive in his work truck which is easy to identify with wrapping that clearly states Renew Painting on the sides and back, along with the business logo on the driver’s door.

What Makes Renew Painting a Micro Business, and How Does That Help the Client?
While a micro business falls under the umbrella of small business, there are a few things that make a micro business different.
For example, a micro business typically has less than 5 employees, whereas a small business can have hundreds of employees; a micro business is owned by one person or a family, and it is started with limited capital since it often doesn’t qualify for standard small business loans due to its micro size.
As a one-man operation with no employees, Renew Painting embraces its designation as a micro business.
What this means for clients is that Renew Painting doesn’t have to go through multiple channels or teams of people to make decisions or solve problems.
With John in charge of the business and performing the work for the clients, he is the only one clients deal with, which makes it easier for clients to have one point of contact, and it creates better results for everyone.
While Renew Painting differs in some respects from larger businesses, there are still shared commonalities when it comes to corporate structures, proper licensing and insurance, and following laws and regulations regarding business operations (see the Renew Painting business license & insurance coverage below).
