About Exterior Painting Season & Scheduling:
The exterior painting season at Renew Painting starts in May and ends in October; however, it is dependent on the weather.
Even though spring starts in March, April in the Sequim area often has freezing or low temperatures at night, which isn’t ideal for painting exteriors during the daytime; it is also a month with sporadic rain and wind, both of which aren’t helpful for painting exteriors or planning a schedule.
Because of the inconsistent weather conditions in April, it is best to start exterior projects in May for convenient scheduling for homeowners and optimal results for everyone.
Ideal painting weather can stretch well into October and even November, which allows for six months of exterior painting projects.
Renew Painting is a one-man operation, so a project will take more time compared to a crew of multiple painters.
John, the owner of Renew Painting, allows one to two weeks to complete an entire house, depending on the size of the house and if there are outbuildings too; this includes prep work such as pressure washing, making repairs, and clean-up after painting is complete.
With only six months of ideal weather for exterior projects, it is beneficial to schedule an exterior project as early as possible, since there is only room for 14 to 16 exterior projects each year, and it is dependent on the size of the houses and optimal weather conditions.
About Exterior Painting Projects:
Renew Painting specializes in repainting the exteriors of homes and outbuildings that are one or two levels; Renew Painting does not paint decks, fences, new construction homes, or homes that are three levels or larger.
During the bid meeting for an exterior project, John will discuss with the client the exact details of the project as far as what will be painted and how it will be painted:
- Siding and trim (siding is sprayed; trim is brushed and rolled)
- Only trim (brushed and rolled)
- Gutters and downspouts (sprayed)
- Soffits and gables (sprayed)
- Garage doors, front and other exterior doors (sprayed)
- Chimneys/brickwork (sprayed)
Spraying is the preferred method of Renew Painting as it provides a better result than brushing and rolling.
However, brushing and rolling is only used on trim due to the cut-ins which require finer control of the paint being applied and the rough texture of trim compared to the smoothness of siding; brushing and rolling trim ultimately creates a better result than spraying.
When the client receives the bid, typically within 24 to 48 hours after the bid meeting, it will include the following:
- Three paint options to choose from (good, better, and best) based on paint quality.
- A company information packet that details the scope of work Renew Painting performs, services that Renew Painting doesn’t perform, along with proof of licensing, insurance, and warranty information.
- Product literature describing the recommended products for the project.
All work performed is covered by a 5-year conditional workmanship warranty so long as clients adhere to the warranty conditions specified in the company information packet.
How to Prepare for an Exterior Painting Project:
- Remove all decorative items (bird feeders, artwork, hanging planters) away from the painting area.
- Move any heavy items (benches, planters) away from the painting area.
- Trim any vegetation at least 2 feet away from the painting area.
- Be prepared to move cars and vehicles away from the painting area.
Renew Painting takes every precaution to make sure paint goes where it is supposed to go, but to avoid getting paint where it does not belong clients need to ensure that their possessions are not too close to the painting area in case of wind that may carry the paint away from the painted surface.
If a client needs help with moving items during the painting project, please let John know so that he can make accommodations that work for everyone.
How Long to Wait Before Putting Up Exterior Décor After Spraying:
Due to the cure time of paint, it is recommended that clients wait at least three days before putting up any exterior decorations on the painted surface after the completion of the project.
If exterior decorations are placed on the painted area before three days and the paint is not completely cured, imprints may appear in the paint and it will not be covered by the warranty.
